Canopy by Hilton Debuts First Hotel in New England

Canopy by Hilton has unveiled its maiden hotel in New England: the Canopy by Hilton Portland Waterfront in Maine. Located in the city’s historic Old Port district, the property is crafted to entice both travelers and locals with a thoughtful design executed by Baskervill and HKS, and interiors by local firm Ealain Studio. “[Owner and manager Fathom Companies] wanted a space that was a part of the city itself—welcoming not only to visitors but to the people of Portland,” says Baskervill principal Bob Tierney. “It needed to be approachable and comfortable, while offering something entirely new and distinctive. Ultimately, our team was aligned and invested in doing just that.”

The 135-room property displays a strong sense of place thanks to locally crafted artwork and furnishings throughout the public spaces and accommodations, the latter of which were curated by Erin Hutton. Custom furniture and carpeting by Matt Hutton welcome visitors at reception, while nature photography by Nicole Wolf adorns the lobby with the scenery of coastal Maine. A bright, geometric mural from Ryan Adams anchors the hotel’s members lounge and eight bespoke pieces by Jenny McGee Dougherty punctuate meeting rooms as well.

Located on the sixth floor, cocktail and raw bar Luna Rooftop Bar features a felt and leather artwork upon its bar as well as panoramic waterfront views. The Salt Yard Café + Bar also frames the local scenery via floor-to-ceiling windows, while operable windows in guestrooms further link guests with their surroundings. “The property respects adjacent building façades with both scale and texture, while allowing hints of glass and light to reflect the harbor and Casco Bay,” says HKS principal and hospitality director Luis Zapiain. “Operable windows and doors at both the street and guestroom level allow for open air and cross ventilation through the structure.”

Additional amenities include more than 3,000 square feet of meeting space, a 24-hour fitness center, and a retail space home to artisanal goods from local makers.
